Butter, Toothbrushes, and 3 other everyday items you need for your hair Part 2

Last week I talked about the types of everyday items you need for your hair. The first part covered butter and toothbrushes, that you can find here.

It’s always hard to decide what products work best with your hair, so here are a couple for items that would be considered essential for curly hair.

A Wide Tooth Comb

You probably already have this, but some people might be wondering why a big brush wouldn’t suffice in place of a comb.

The truth is, combs are better for detangling those knots, while brushes are better for getting those little hair in place. Be careful-hard plastic brushes and bristles will tug and rip your hair apart if used for normal daily brushing on knotted hair.

Also, you can use combs for making a clean part, however with brushes, you cannot.

Oil

Spraying a few mists of oil-sheen on the twists will keep the hair shining as well as healthier. African-American hair tends to become dry faster than that of other ethnic groups. Therefore, coily hair should be spritz with oil at least once a week.

You can also use oils for deep conditioning treatments and for protective styles. I cover all those different types of oils here, here and here.

Pre-Shampoo

Pre-shampoo is a type of conditioning treatment that is applied on hair before using the actual shampoo. It’s thick which allows it to form a coat over hair strands.

The importance of this is protecting the hair from getting too dry and breaking. It also forms a protective layer from the harsh ingredients of the shampoo. After scrubbing your hair with a shampoo, it will still feel soft and smooth.

You can make your own pre-shampoo at home using a protein-based conditioner and organic oil. However, it is much easier to buy a ready made treatment.
